Prostate Massage
For Prostate Health
Prostate massage is a technique
for massaging the prostate gland. In terms of
prostate health, prostatic massage is
performed by urologists sometimes as part of the
diagnostic workup and sometimes as therapy for various
types of prostatitis or chronic
prostate pain syndromes ( prostadynia).
The principle of prostate massage is that the
massage causes the prostate to release fluid which has
accumulated in the acini of the prostate gland. Some of
this fluid can be collected as it exits from the urethral
meatus and can be sent to the laboratory to be cultured
to see if there is an infectious cause of the prostate
symptoms.
If there is an infectious cause, then
appropriate antibiotics can be administered.
The technique of prostatic massage or how to
massage the prostate is as follows:
The rectum is entered with a lubricated, gloved
hand. The gland should be massaged from the lateral
aspect towards the midline on each side, from base to
apex.
Prostate massage for improved prostatic health
should not be performed if acute bacterial prostatitis is
suspected since the prostatic massage may actually cause
the spread of bacteria through the blood
stream.
Prostate massage is also used by some as part of
sexual activity. In this vein, it is commonly referred to
as prostate milking.
